I decided to stay in town tonight instead of heading back toward the fort. Found a small room above a quiet street, close enough to hear the gulls and the halyards tapping masts down by the Port Townsend marina. The building is old, the kind where the floorboards talk and the hot water takes its time. Felt right to stay closer to whatever the day was trying to tell me.
Before settling in, I walked to the shoreline where the marina meets the bay. The tide was lower than yesterday. Gray sand stretched out in flat, firm sheets. I took a few swings with the 5-iron—no ball, just the motion. Sometimes it’s the swing that matters, not the outcome.
Later, I stepped into a tavern near the waterfront. Nothing fancy. Just a wooden bar polished by years of elbows and a brass bell on the door that rings even when you try to keep quiet.
The bartender asked what I was having.
Añejo. Neat.
He didn’t ask about salt. Didn’t ask about lime. Good sign.
Down the bar were two men dressed a little too neat for this town. Not locals. Their shoes gave them away. They spoke in low tones about shore access, permits, and not waiting much longer. I kept my eyes on my glass and listened. You can hear more that way.
A woman came in not long after. Didn’t catch her name. She ordered coffee, which tells you everything about the kind of day she had. She watched the two men the way you watch a storm—steady, waiting, knowing.
We didn’t talk. Sometimes sharing the room is its own conversation.
I walked back to my room along the bluff. Fog was rolling in, thick and slow. A foghorn carried across the water, low and steady. The kind of sound that stays with you. Lights from the fort flickered through the trees like something half-remembered.
I’ll stay another day. Something here is shifting beneath the surface.
