Part 29 — The Weight Shifts: Evidence Against Greaves in Port Townsend

I finally sat down for the night. Lights low, boots drying near the door, the tide pushing hard against the rocks like it’s trying to climb the shore. I don’t know if today counts as a win, but something shifted. For the first time since this started, the evidence against Greaves in Port Townsend spoke louder than fear.

Morning — When the Evidence Started Talking

We met at Claire Reddick’s office just after sunrise. The marina was already waking up — saws whining from the sheds, compressors kicking on, voices carrying through open doors. Even Mara’s dad, Cal, was out early, standing beside his outboard rack tightening bolts like he was ready to fix something bigger than an engine. People moved with purpose today.

Inside Claire’s office was a man I hadn’t met before — steady posture, calm voice, holding a folder like it carried weight.

Detective Aaron Cole.
State level. Not the locals.

He watched the security footage Walt brought in, stopping the frame where Eddie was forced into the black SUV.

“This is enough to challenge the arrest,” he said. “Chain of evidence is compromised. The charges won’t stand.”

He closed the folder slowly.

“We’re not talking about a mistake. We’re talking about intentional obstruction and possible kidnapping.”

Mara let out a slow breath — the first sign her shoulders had dropped in days.

Claire leaned forward.

“The tide’s turning. And Greaves knows it.”

Eddie Walks Out

By late afternoon we were standing outside the county jail — Mara, Walt, Cal, and Eddie’s wife, Anna. Cold wind cutting across the parking lot. No talking. Just waiting.

When Eddie stepped through the doors, he looked thinner, like the last few days had taken pieces out of him. Anna reached him first, arms locked tight around his neck. He held on like he wasn’t going to let go again.

No speeches. No applause. Just a quiet moment that meant everything.

Walt put a hand on Eddie’s shoulder.

“You two stay with me. No one’s going home until this lands.”

Eddie nodded, voice rough.

“Thank you. All of you.”

The Filing

Back at Claire’s office, she dropped a stack of documents onto the table — hard enough to echo.

“Civil suit filed. Public record. Wrongful arrest, coercion, and retaliation.”

She looked up.

“Federal partners opened a case file this afternoon. Greaves and his men are officially under review.”

Mara rubbed her temples.

“He’s going to hit back.”

Claire didn’t flinch.

“Good. That’s when they make mistakes.”

Greaves Watches

Later at the marina, the black SUV rolled in and stopped near the boat ramp. Engine running. Tinted glass hiding everything inside.

He didn’t get out.
Didn’t need to.

People working in the yard paused in what they were doing — not to stare, just to watch. A few exchanged quick looks, then went back to work like they weren’t afraid of him anymore.

For the first time since he arrived, Greaves looked like a man standing on thinner ice than he wanted anyone to know.

Message From Shaw

Back in my room, my phone buzzed — encrypted message, no name.

“Pieces moving. Don’t lift your foot off his throat.”

The tide’s rising now. Fast.

Where It Stands

The evidence against Greaves cracked the surface wide today.
People aren’t looking at the ground anymore.
Tomorrow will be louder.
