Part 53 — Arriving Coos Bay

Journal Entry — Coos Bay

Southbound didn’t take much convincing today.

I caught a ride with a food distributor headed my way. I’d seen him the night before at the bar—same room, same noise, different corner. He recognized the club right away. Said he figured anyone carrying that much iron around wasn’t in a hurry.

He talked most of the way. Salesmen do. Restaurants opening and closing. Which towns were slowing down, which ones still worked year-round. He said Coos Bay kept moving when others went quiet. Said it like a fact, not a pitch.

I listened and watched the road.

We rolled into town late morning. The air felt heavier here. River water instead of open coast. Fuel and salt mixed together. Boats tied up close, not for show. Nothing about it asked you to linger for the view.

He dropped me near the docks and pointed me toward a place crews eat when they don’t have time to waste. Told me to try the fish house later if I was still around. Then he shook my hand and headed off, already thinking about his next stop.

I ate first.

Simple food, done fast, eaten watching people who had places to be. Boats unloading. Gear getting stacked. Conversations short and to the point. It gave me a sense of how the day moved here.

After that, I went looking for sand.

Found a stretch along the water that did the job. Darker than what I’d left behind. Packed down, worked over. I set the bag down and took a couple of swings. Short. Controlled. The wind stayed low. The club came through clean.

That felt right.

I spent the afternoon walking. Docks, then streets that ran inland. Older buildings. A park tucked back where the noise dropped off. Enough going on to know I wouldn’t run out of ground too quickly.

Late in the day I found a room. Plain. Quiet. It didn’t need anything more than that. I set the bag down and decided I’d stay a few days.

Dinner was at the fish house the rep mentioned. Busy, but not crowded. The kind of place that knows what it’s good at and sticks to it. I took my time with the meal. Let the day settle without trying to sort it.

Back out after, walking off the food and the miles. Coos Bay stayed busy around me. Not loud. Just working.

This place isn’t asking to be figured out all at once. That’s fine. Neither am I.

Sand Rating: 7 / 10
Condition: Dark, packed, worked hard
