Part 63: Walking the town, Sonoma

Journal Entry — Sonoma

I left the coast behind in the morning. Coffee came quick and pointed me inland.

The ride came from a guy named Devin picking up an electric bike he’d special ordered. Nicer truck. Clean inside. Not the kind that carried tools or mud. He talked about the ride he planned once he got it home. The hills. The views. How quiet it would be early in the day.

He liked the area for the way it looked and the way it ate. Said there were places you could sit outside and take your time. Good food, clean lines, nothing rushed. He drove like someone who expected the road to cooperate.

The land changed as we went. Vineyards replaced open ground. Fences ran straight and deliberate. Signs were fresh. Everything felt maintained. Even the air seemed arranged.

He dropped me near the center of town and wished me luck. Said I’d picked a good place to walk.

Sonoma felt calm in a practiced way. People moved slowly, like they had nowhere else to be. Tables were set outside. Glasses already half full. Conversations leaned toward where someone had been or what they’d tried last.

I kept moving.

I didn’t go into the tasting rooms. Stopped long enough to look at a few menus posted out front, then kept walking. There was a rhythm to it that didn’t ask much from me, and I didn’t ask anything back.

I found a café instead. Bright room. Simple board. Ordered something fresh and sat where I could see the street. The food came clean and measured. Good balance. Nothing heavy. It felt considered without trying too hard.

I stayed longer than I expected. Finished everything. Let the place do what it was meant to do.

Later, I found some open ground near the edge of town. Grass worn thin in spots. Hard earth underneath. I took a few swings there, careful about space. Kept it short. Let the motion settle.

By evening, the town leaned even further into itself. I found a place to stay nearby and went out again for dinner. Chose something straightforward and let the room carry the rest. No lingering. No second round.

Sonoma was fine. Easy to be in. Easy to leave.
