Journal Entry — Santa Cruz
I left the city in the morning and stayed near the water as long as I could. The pace felt right again. Open road. Ocean on my side. No reason to hurry.
I made it to Santa Cruz late morning. The place carried more motion than the last few stops. Younger energy. People moving with intent instead of drifting. It didn’t feel like a show. Just a town doing its thing.
I walked the edges first. Streets just off the main pull. Paths that ran parallel to the water. Watched surfers come in and out, boards tucked under their arms like they’d done it a thousand times. Nobody looking for an audience.
The beach was wide and busy without being crowded. Sand mixed and worked hard. I took the club out and made a few swings where there was room. Same motion. Same finish. Let it settle and moved on.
Lunch came easy. Something casual near the water. I ate without thinking much about it and kept moving.
I didn’t check my phone right away. When I finally did, there was another message from JR. Shorter than the first. Different tone.
He asked if I was still heading south. Said it might be good to connect sooner than later.
No explanation. No details.
I put the phone away and kept walking, but the day shifted a little after that. Not enough to change plans. Just enough to pull my thoughts forward.
There was a time when waiting was part of the job. Long stretches of nothing, broken by moments that mattered. You learned how to move slow without losing focus. How to be ready without looking like it.
By evening, I found a place for the night and stayed put. Tomorrow pointed toward Morro Bay now. Not urgent. Just next.
