Part 86: Leaving It Upright, Morro Bay

Journal Entry — Morro Bay

Morning came in steady. Harbor back to its regular shape. Boats on their lines, water moving without asking for attention.

JR and I had coffee on the boat, the kind that doesn’t need much conversation around it. The night before had settled the way it was supposed to. Nothing left open.

Before heading out, we took the skiff over to Red Tide’s boat.

He was already up. Hat on. Door open. Moving slow, like someone who knew there was no reason to rush anymore. The guitar was inside, resting where it belonged.

We didn’t talk long. He thanked us without leaning into it. Said the room felt right again. Said it mattered who stood behind it when things got thin.

JR told him the place was his as long as he wanted it.

Red Tide nodded. Looked out toward the harbor for a second, then back at us. Said, “That’s all I ever needed to know.”

That was enough.

Back on the skiff, JR didn’t say anything right away. Neither did I. It felt like the end of something we’d done before—leaving a place once the work was finished, without calling it work. You didn’t mark it. You didn’t linger. You just stepped away once the structure held.

JR thanked me again as we tied up.

I told him I hadn’t done anything.

He smiled this time. He knew what I meant.

We walked the docks together, then stopped where the path split. He said he’d be sticking around. The club. The boat. A routine that finally fit.

He offered me a ride south.

I passed. Said I’d walk for a while.

No promises. No timelines. We both knew how to find the other if it ever mattered.

The road out of Morro Bay came easy. Firm ground. Cool air. I took a couple swings where the sand held and felt it answer back.

Somewhere ahead, the coast keeps bending.
Different light. Different rooms. Same rules.

I’ll head that way.

Sand Rating: 8 / 10
Condition: Firm, cool, lightly worked
