Part 46 — Crossing South, Oregon

I left Long Beach early.

The wind was already working when I stepped outside, pushing low clouds inland and flattening everything it touched. I walked until I found coffee. A small place just off the road, open because someone decided it should be.

There was a woman sitting by the window, paper cup in both hands, eyes moving more than the rest of her. The kind of posture you recognize before you know why.

I walked over and she looked up, already halfway to standing.

“Susan,” she said, offering a hand.

“BG.”

That seemed to settle things.

She asked where I was headed.
“Oregon,” I said. “South.”

She nodded once.
“That works,” she said. “I’m going that way.”

Her car was clean, practical. No extra weight in it. We drove without music for a while, the road doing most of the talking.

She told me she was a traveling nurse. Said it the way people say what they do now, not what they are. Somewhere along the way she mentioned she’d been in the military before that. Not long. Long enough.

She named a place overseas like it was a grocery store. I didn’t ask questions. She didn’t offer more.

That was the rhythm.

We crossed into Oregon without stopping. Just a sign and a change in how the road sat under the tires. She glanced over when it happened.

“Feels different,” she said.

“It does,” I said.

The coast tightened up as we went south. Trees closer to the road. Fewer places to pull off without committing to it. She let me out near a quiet turnoff, close enough to where I was headed.

“Good timing,” she said.

“It usually is,” I said.

She waited until I had my bag settled before pulling away.

Arch Cape didn’t announce itself. No center. No reason to stop unless you wanted to. The ocean was there, steady and close, but it wasn’t trying to sell itself.

I found a room without much trouble. Inexpensive. Clean. Quiet enough to hear the water once everything else settled down.

That suited me fine.
