Journal Entry-Arch Cape
Arch Cape didn’t change much overnight.
The ocean was there when I woke up, low and steady, like it had been all along. No reason to get moving fast. I walked a short stretch of beach and turned back when it felt like enough.
The place stays out of its own way. Houses set back. People spaced out. Nothing competing for attention.
That suits me.
I picked up fresh oysters late morning. Came in fresh today. By afternoon the air cooled enough to make a fire make sense.
There was a communal pit near where I was staying. A couple already had it going, flames steady and low. I asked if they minded sharing.
“Not at all,” the man said, shifting to make room. “We were just warming up.”
I set the oysters near the coals and waited. No rush. They watched for a minute, curious but polite.
“Where’d you get those?” the woman asked.
“Down the road,” I said. “They said today was a good day.”
She smiled. “They usually know.”
When the shells started to open, I pulled them off and set them aside. I offered a few over.
“These don’t need much,” I said.
They agreed after the first one. The kind of nod people give when something delivers without fuss.
We talked while the fire did its work. Where they’d driven from. How long they were staying. What the coast had been like farther south. I asked questions. They answered without rushing. It was easy to listen.
They asked about me. I told them where I’d been recently. That seemed to satisfy them.
The fire burned down the way good fires do. No one tried to stretch it past its time. We finished the oysters, brushed the sand off our hands, and let the quiet come back.
I thanked them and headed in.
Now I’m in the room, boots drying again, the sound of the ocean pressing softly through the walls. Arch Cape doesn’t ask you to perform. It just gives you room to pay attention.
That’s plenty.
