Journal Entry — Coos Bay
I knew where I was going this morning.
The shuttle out toward the coast ran on its own schedule. A few locals. A couple people who looked like they’d done this before. No one asking questions. That suited me fine.
West of Charleston the land opened up and stayed that way. When we pulled in, the beach didn’t bother easing you in. It was wide, exposed, and already moving under the wind.
Bastendorff Beach Park gave you room.
I walked for a while before stopping. The sand stretched without interruption. No stacks. No framing cliffs. Just distance. A couple ahead of me moved slowly, heads down, eyes scanning the ground.
Rock hounds.
They told me they travel beaches, looking for agates and whatever else turns up if you’re patient enough. Some places give things up easily, they said. Others make you work for it. Luck helps, but time matters more.
They kept moving. I stayed put.
I set the bag down and took a few swings. More than I had in town. The sand was firm and forgiving, the kind that lets you follow through without thinking too much. The wind asked for a little adjustment, but nothing more than that.
I stayed longer than I planned. Watched the beach work the way it does when there’s room for it. People spread out. Noise thinned. The quiet here wasn’t empty—it just had space.
On the way back, I stopped in Charleston for a late lunch. Smaller feel. Quieter pace. Ate without rushing, watched the harbor move through its afternoon. It felt like a place that knew what it was and didn’t need to add much.
Back in Coos Bay by late afternoon. Sand still in my shoes. Tired in a good way.
I’ll stay one more day.
There’s no reason to hurry this yet.
