Part 56-Breakfast at the Counter, Coos Bay

Journal Entry — Coos Bay

I started the day at an old diner just off the main drag.

Nothing fancy. Counter seating. Eggs, toast, and coffee that showed up before you asked for it. A handful of older locals sat spaced out along the counter, newspapers folded the same way they probably had been for years. A quiet group. No rush to fill the air.

I ate slow and listened to the room do what it always does.

When I paid and stepped back outside, the morning carried on without noticing. That felt about right.

I spent the rest of the morning walking parts of town I hadn’t yet. Residential streets. Civic buildings. The spaces between where people worked and where they went back to at the end of the day. Coos Bay felt familiar now—not because I’d seen everything, but because I didn’t need to.

I stopped briefly at a small local museum. Quiet inside. A couple displays. The person running it knew the history without needing notes. We talked about the cycles—industry, slowdown, recovery. How the town kept adjusting without pretending to be something else. I thanked them and moved on.

The afternoon passed easily.

Later, I went back to the water one last time. Same stretch I’d used before. The sand felt even underfoot now. Familiar. I set the bag down and took a few smooth swings. No testing. No correcting. Just letting the club come through and finish where it wanted to.

That closed it.

Back in the room, I packed most of the bag and left a few things out for morning. No rush. Nothing left undone.

Coos Bay gave me what I needed.

Tomorrow I’ll head south.

Sand Rating: 7.5 / 10
