Part 61: Walking the Bluffs, Mendocino

Journal Entry — Mendocino

I left Fort Bragg early. Needed coffee first. Found an espresso shop just off the road. Clean counter. Small case of pastries. Ordered an espresso and one thing from the case and took them outside. Ate standing up and didn’t rush it.

I made it to town late morning. Mendocino sat where it wanted to, turned toward the water. More people around. Slower movement. Everything felt arranged without calling attention to it.

I spent most of the day walking the bluffs. Open trails. Long views. The wind kept things moving even when nobody else was. People passed in both directions, stopping often, cameras out, talking quietly. I stayed to the side and let them go by.

A lookout farther along gave the water some room. Benches set back just enough. I stood there awhile and watched the sets roll through. Nothing dramatic. Just steady.

A short trail dropped down to the beach later in the afternoon. Stairs most of the way. Lighter sand when I reached the bottom. Drier. Easier underfoot. I took a few swings there. Smooth. Let the club travel and come back on its own.

Lunch was soup and bread from a small place in town. Hot bowl. Thick slice. Enough to keep going. I didn’t linger.

I found a place to stay before evening. One-night terms. Set the bag down and went back out.

Dinner was close by. Hot sandwich and a shot. Simple order. I ate slow and let the day settle.

Back in the room now. Quiet outside. Windows open.

Sand Rating: 8 / 10
Condition: Even, dry, settled
