Part 60: One Night on the Working Coast, Fort Bragg

Journal Entry — Fort Bragg

I needed coffee this morning. Found it at a small convenience store just off the road. Old place. One aisle, a cooler humming in the corner, pot sitting too long on the warmer. It worked.

I was pouring my second cup when an old Chevy pulled in. Worn paint. Bed scratched up from years of use. The driver came in slow, nodded once, and grabbed a coffee of his own.

He noticed the club when I stepped outside.

Said he was heading south toward Fort Bragg and could give me a lift most of the way. Drove an easy pace. Knew the road without watching it too closely.

He’d been in Humboldt a long time. Said he’d grown for years. Didn’t say where or how. Just that it kept him busy when it needed to and left him alone the rest of the time. Talked about weather, about patience, about knowing when to stop talking. He kept things light and left the rest unsaid.

The coast opened back up as we went. Trees thinned. More sky showed through. The road stopped feeling tight.

He dropped me near the edge of town and headed on. We shook hands and that was it.

I walked down to the water and spent some time at Glass Beach. The ground there felt different underfoot. Harder. No real sand to work with. I swung the club nearby instead, short and easy, letting it move without asking much from it.

Fort Bragg felt like a place that knew what it was. Working docks. People moving with purpose. A little worn, but not hiding.

The club drew a few looks as I walked. Nothing more than curiosity.

I found dinner near the harbor. Seafood place, busy without being loud. Ordered what was fresh and a glass of something cold. The food came hot and simple, the kind that didn’t need dressing up. I ate slow, watched the room, and left when I was done.

I got a room for the night. Same kind as usual. One night only.

Mendocino’s close. I’ll head there in the morning and give it a full day.
